Crab Fishing

The Basics

An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of salt water. Most have one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the sea. They’re common along our coastline, tidal and range in size from Sydney Harbour to tiny inlets and sheltered bays.

Estuaries are one of the best places to fish. Some species only exist in the zone while other species visit periodically. Some fish come into the estuary to breed as the calm water provides a good habitat for the eggs and small fish to thrive. They also provide a food source for bigger predators.

Another good thing about many estuaries is you can fish without a boat because there are often tidal flats and foreshore areas that produce good fishing.

Crab Fishing

These crabs look magnificent in the sunlight, so as long as you’re careful, you can grab them by the rear legs and hold them up in the sun and appreciate the brilliant blue patterns on their armour.

There are three methods locals use, the most popular is walking through the shallow waters and scooping the crabs with a metal basket on the end of a broom handle.

For the second method you need a boat and 10 drop nets which you bait with old fish and wait 10 minutes and then pull up your nets hoping you have a legal size crab.

The third method is to goggle and snorkel dive with a glove on your hand and grab the crab.
It is a most enjoyable pastime and the cooked crabs are very much in demand.

Estuary Fishing

If you’re fixing to catch something while you’re out there, here are a few tips for catching popular species like, Bream, Flathead and Whiting.

To increase you’re chances of success fishing in the tidal estuaries, pick a peak feeding time to get out there. The fish are opportunists when it comes to feeding, and they bite more frequently around times when the light is changing and the tide is changing.

The change of light corresponds to dawn and dusk. Dawn sees the emergence of the sun and darkness disappearing which provides predators with increased visibility and a chance to hunt unsuspecting prey that have been exposed with the onset of daylight.

Dusk, on the other hand, sees the cloak of darkness lulling prey into a false sense of security and travelling about more freely. Around these change of light periods, hunters are looking for prey that have been caught out and offer an easy meal.

Another benefit of these periods is the peace, tranquillity and lack of disruption on the water to scare the fish. Swimmers, boaties and jet skiers are more prevalent during the day so it makes sense to fish when the water isn’t being bombarded by the general public if you want to improve your chances of catching a few.

A Different Mindset

Crab fishing is a very different activity, it is slow paced and great for people who’d love a day on the beach with the family. Wherever you decide to go, it will always be quiet and peaceful as is the nature of estuaries. Bring your camping setup and relax.

You can spend a lot of money to get away from the constant hum and drum of modern society but one of the most therapeutic methods to quiet the mind is to spend a day out amongst nature.
