North West Island

What you need to know

Situated approximately 75 kilometres from Gladstone, North West Island is the largest Coral Cay in the area and forms part of the Capricorn Cays National Park.

North West Island offers opportunities for bushwalking, nature study, reef walking, diving and snorkelling. Being a large coral cay it has longer walking opportunities through the island and around its beaches. Fishing is also quite popular on the island. Visitors are requested to limit their fishing and you must only fish in the authorised zones.

Please note that we do not take individuals as it isn’t as cost effective or efficient as taking a medium to large sized group (i.e. 4 – 12 people). We have found that it is more enjoyable for everyone involved if the group is well acquainted with each other, we try not to take multiple smaller groups on the same boat, simply because different groups of people have different ideals for the trip in mind. We recommend organising with a group of mates or work colleagues, the more the merrier!

What we get up to

Thanks to North West Island being remote, there’s likely to be only a few other tourists out on the island if any at all. A ferry from Gladstone drops off supplies and tourists to the island but many only stay for a day before heading back to the mainland.

We encourage you and your group to spend a night on the island, there is no light pollution and weather is rarely sour, this means that when night comes you can see the Milky Way galaxy with startling clarity. It lights up the night and the sky is thick with stars that cannot be seen in populated areas. Come and experience a slice of life from a time before Thomas Edison.

S.C.U.B.A Diving

Diving is a great way to get away from all the noise, traffic and troubles in our lives. As soon as you descend into the waters you hear nothing but your own breathing underwater. No talking, no phones ringing, all communication goes via hand signals. When you’re below the surface you completely forget about what’s happening on land, and what keeps you busy. For that hour you are under the water it’s just you and your thoughts.

Whether or not you have your own gear, you have the option to hire some from us. All of our gear is thoroughly checked over and well maintained for your safety.

Wherever you dive, you will always be in great company. It’s great to hear how other people have experienced that dive and you will often find yourself sharing your stories before and after the dive. Many friendships have started during a great diving trip. You all share the same passion for the ocean and feel bonded with one another. No matter what you do for a living, what your car looks like or what kind of friends you have, diving takes all that away and the modern day judgement that comes with it.

Spear Fishing

Spearfishing is a discipline of the sport of hunting. It’s rewarding, very challenging, adrenaline pumping and visceral.
Steven Rinella, an author, hunter, conservationist and host of the Netflix series “Meat Eater”, believes that any form of hunting is “real fun”, as oppose to “cheap fun” like riding a rollercoaster or playing videogames. Those are fun in the moment but you rarely remember the event after a few days. “Real fun” as he describes it is, the kind of fun that comes from doing something that isn’t necessarily fun in the moment, but it is fun in hindsight and it is the kind of fun that enriches your life because you’ll remember it forever and it makes you come back time and time again.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling allows people to witness wildlife in it’s natural habitat. Watching a turtle slowly chopping on some coral or sea grass, unfussed by the presence of a snorkeler is so special. Similarly, seeing a reef shark cruise by on an evening hunt, or a school of brightly coloured fish move as a unified group, or even watching a small slug slowly moving over a rock, snorkelling opens a whole new world to us, otherwise terrestrial dwellers.

Fishing

Adventure Charters Hervey Bay are an ideal way to get to the big fish! We’ll take you between 10km and 35km offshore, where you can experience reef fishing at its best.
All deep sea and reef fishing charters are organised by our crew who have grown up fishing the reefs off the Fraser Coast. Our local knowledge combined with the highest quality gear, latest fish finders and navigation technologies will take you to where the fish are biting!

Camping

We encourage all our customers to spend a night camping under the stars on North West Island. The island serves as a base camp for the trip and any fish caught during the day can be cooked over the fire that night. We supply cooking equipment, tents, utilities
